Making Websites Accessible To All

For disabled people the Internet is an invaluable resource for keeping in touch, sourcing information, keeping up to date with news and sport, researching hobbies and interests, education, employment, shopping and much more. With the growth of accessible technology, disabled people are now highly skilled in I.T. However, many Websites still fall short of being an accessible environment for people with a range of disabilities. 15% of the UK adult population have a disability (8.6 million people),so it is by no means a small section of the population that find themselves excluded when surfing the Net. In Northern Ireland this figure rises to over 21% of the population who declare themselves as having a disability.

Tips For Creating An Accessible Website

Following some simple guidelines you could make your Website accessible an attract many more visitors, who will in turn recommend that site to their family, friends and colleagues. There are some very straightforward tips and techniques and if implemented, your site could become more attractive to all, and not just those with a disability. Make it a friendly, welcoming and comfortable environment and people will return. Make it hard work and they won't.

  • Text: make it clear, consistent, get the font size and colour right.
  • Language: Unless you are dealing with a subject matter that requires it, keep language informal, jargon-free and sentences short and to the point.
  • Images: Always attach text labels to images, only include them when necessary and keep them separate from text where possible.
  • Text Only: If possible, it is a good idea to have a “Text Only” Version of your Website.
  • Buttons and forms: make sure all buttons and form fields are clearly text labelled.
  • Links: Ensure each link is clearly defined with text, keep the links on each page to a necessary minimum and don’t continually break text up with links.
  • Information: Try to have the important information you want people to notice at the top of the page so it is easy to find.

Got An Online Business?

Although unemployment remains high among disabled people, they still amount to a sizable portion of the population and do have disposable incomes as well as the same desires, needs and requirements as everyone else. With many shops and town centres still proving inaccessible, your online shop could offer an accessible alternative. Remember that 15% of the UK and 21% of the Northern Ireland population have a disability, these are customers you could be serving. Exclude them and your competitors will benefit. Include them and reap the rewards and see your business grow!
